چکیده

Lung cancer is the major human malignancy, accounting for 30% of all cancer-related deaths worldwide. Poor survival of lung cancer patients, together with late diagnosis and resistance to classic chemotherapy, highlights the need for identification of new biomarkers for early detection. Among different cancer biomarkers, small non-coding RNAs called microRNAs (miRNAs) are considered the most promising, owing to their remarkable stability, their cancer-type specificity, and their presence in body fluids. However, results of multiple previous attempts to identify circulating miRNAs specific for lung cancer are inconsistent, likely due to two main reasons: prominent variability in blood miRNA content among individuals and difficulties in distinguishing tumor-relevant miRNAs in the blood from their non-tumor counterparts. To overcome these impediments, we compared circulating miRNA profiles in patients with lung squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) before and after tumor removal, assuming that the levels of all tumor-relevant miRNAs would drop after the surgery. Our results revealed a specific panel of the miRNAs (miR-205, -19a, -19b, -30b, and -20a) whose levels decreased strikingly in the blood of patients after lung SCC surgery. Interestingly, miRNA profiling of plasma fractions of lung SCC patients revealed high levels of these miRNA species in tumor-specific exosomes; additionally, some of these miRNAs were also found to be selectively secreted to the medium by cultivated lung cancer cells. These results strengthen the notion that tumor cells secrete miRNA-containing exosomes into circulation, and that miRNA profiling of the exosomal plasma fraction may reveal powerful cancer biomarkers.

The Five Years Survival after Surgery of Primary Tracheal Squamous Cell Carcinoma: A Case Report and Review of the Literature

Unlike the primary tracheal tumors, squamous cell carcinoma of trachea is common, especially in smokers. This type of tumor has a low rate of survival and it is diagnosed too late on account of late presentation of its signs. The treatment of choice is surgical removal followed by adjuvant radiotherapy; Primary radiotherapy is the appropriate treatment in inoperable cases. In this study, we pre...

Seven-Year Survival of a Patient with Primary Tracheal Squamous Cell Carcinoma after Surgery: A Case Report

The primary tracheal cancers are very rare, and squamous cell carcinoma is its most common form, especially in smokers. Due to the late presentation of symptoms, these tumors are usually diagnosed too late, and thus, they have poor survival. The gold standard protocol for these cancers is surgical excision and adjuvant radiotherapy. Primary radiotherapy is applied for the advanced and inoperabl...

Detection of Mutations in Exons 5 and 8 of Tumor Suppressor Tp53 Gene in Patients with Squamous Cell Carcinoma of Lung Hospitalized in Afzalipour Hospital, Kerman, Iran

Introduction: Despite improvements in the diagnosis and treatment of lung cancer in the past two decades, it has remained the most common cause of death from cancer worldwide. Among all genes that are mutated in lung cancer, TP53 located on chromosome 17P13/1 has a significant diagnostic and prognostic value. TP53 mutations have been extensively studied in lung cancer and TP53 mutational spectr...

Squamous cell carcinoma of lung with unusual site of metastasis

Background: Lung cancer ranks among the most common and most lethal malignancies worldwide. Once vascular or lymphatic invasions occur, metastatic dissemination to distant sites is common. Bone, liver, adrenals, and brain are the most frequent sites of the distant disease. In this study we present a case of squamous cell carcinoma of lung with metastasis of the left knee bursa.Case presentation...
